“Sing No. I” is the first in a series of two pieces. “Sing No. I” is a mixed media piece comprised of layers of repurposed paper and oil paint. When working with mixed media pieces, I believe that the narrative qualities of the materials directly influence the theme of the work. For example, “Sing No. I” was created from pieces of paper that had originally been part of an older work. The older work wrestled with the themes of negative body image and societal beauty standards. I tore apart the old piece, salvaged the materials, and began to repurpose the materials. The original piece, along with negative body image beliefs, was physically deconstructed and, in “Sing. No. I,” was formed into self-acceptance, boldness, and vocal presence.
